National Retail Federation Announces Information-Sharing Platform

The National Retail Federation is moving forward with the creation of a program that will provide retailers access to information on cybersecurity threats identified by retailers, government and law enforcement agencies and partners in the financial services sector. The program, developed in consultation with the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC), will launch with the establishment of an information-sharing platform for retail industry information security specialists, and plans call for a retail ISAC to be established in June.

Retailers Urge Expedited Contract Negotiations at West Coast Ports

The National Retail Federation today urged maritime management and the union representing dockworkers along the U.S. West Coast ports to expedite pending contract negotiations and reach agreement on a new deal well in advance of the expiration of the current contract this summer. NRF believes expedited negotiations would strengthen the supply chain and provide shippers and retailers the certainty they need to utilize the West Coast ports during the holiday shipping period, which begins in July.

The National Retail Federation today urged Congress to address an increasing threat to both traditional brick-and-mortar retailers and online merchants: patent trolls. Patent trolls are shadowy entities that purchase overly-broad patents with the sole intent of suing retailers and other end-users of technology that allegedly infringe on those patents.

NRF Urges 40-Hour Definition of ‘Full Time’ Under Health Care Law

The National Retail Federation today urged Congress to pass the bipartisan Save American Workers Act, which would change the Affordable Care Act’s definition of full-time employment from 30 hours per week to 40 hours. NRF sent a letter to the House saying all votes related to the bill, H.R. 2575, would be considered key votes for the association’s annual scorecard.

Retailers Oppose Increase in Federal Minimum Wage

The National Retail Federation today called Senate legislation aimed at increasing the federal minimum wage by 40 percent an anti-job tax that would lead to higher labor costs for employers and fewer opportunities for young and entry-level workers. NRF will include votes on the minimum wage as “Key Retail Votes” in its annual voting scorecard used to measure legislative support for the retail industry’s public policy priorities.

The National Retail Federation told the Senate today that it’s time for an overhaul of the nation’s fraud-prone credit and debit card system, saying banks’ insistence on cards that use a signature instead of a Personal Identification Number puts merchants and their customers at risk. Indeed, card companies have continued to promulgate the use of fraud-prone signature cards despite their own research – conducted almost 25 years ago – that showed that PIN-based cards provided more security for consumers, retailers and banks.
