Embracing a career that shares her compassion

A desire to help others has always been a big part of Stephanie Mekhjian’s identity. As a high school student in a suburb of Dallas, Stephanie joined her school’s medical internship program and embarked on weekly rotations at nearby veterans’ and children’s hospitals. During those visits, she learned about the compassionate care given by physicians and nurses — while also discovering that the sight of blood made her just a little queasy.

After she graduated, Stephanie took a part-time sales position with Victoria’s Secret. “My only intention was to have a job closer to my new university and to bring in a little spending money for those trendy ‘Pink’ sweats,” she admits. But after a quick promotion and a taste of management responsibility, she was hooked. She found herself dropping by the store on her days off to make sure everything was running smoothly and staying up until 4:00 a.m. to ensure sales displays were perfect. “Retail became part of my identity,” she says, allowing her to incorporate her love of people through the care she took in hiring, educating and promoting talent.

“Through retail, I have found that medicine is not the only way to heal people. Sometimes all it takes is a bright smile, a good ear and a beautiful product.”

Now a store manager at David’s Bridal, Stephanie hopes her forthcoming bachelor’s degree in business from University of Phoenix will help her become an even stronger advocate for her customers and her employee team. “Through retail, I have found that medicine is not the only way to heal people. Sometimes all it takes is a bright smile, a good ear and a beautiful product.”
