Turning an employee discount into an amazing career

Like millions of young people before him, Mark Robinson was first attracted to a retail career by the employee discount. As a sales associate at a clothier specializing in contemporary fashions for big and tall men, his love for retail blossomed from his first day on the floor. Soon, it became less about getting discounted clothing for himself and more about serving the customers who walked through the door. “Whether it was young men like me, frustrated with what we thought were our only choices, or helping a mother pick out a gift that her son would really like, I fell in love with customer service.”

Today, 26 years later, Mark has turned his employee perk into a stellar retail career. As store director for Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH in Kansas City, Kan., Mark manages a staff of 30. And while his days as a part-time sales associate are long behind him, the lessons that he learned in that role stay with him every day. He believes that people in retail share a common trait. “For the most part, we love to make others — whether clients or colleagues — feel better about themselves.”

Mark hopes that a degree in business management from University of Phoenix will empower him to have even more positive effects on his employees and customers. Eventually, he sees himself in an HR leadership role, driving improvements in training programs and employee retention.
