On the road to retail success

For more than 21 years, Joel Smith has worked, lived and loved retail. From the food service industry to one of the world’s most popular retail clothing brands, Joel’s journey has been defined by hard work, performance and building strong relationships. While some see the hours, customers and commitment of retail as a challenge, Joel looks upon these elements as benefits that define his enjoyment of the industry. “Coming in each day with an opportunity to learn something new and help solve a new problem excites me.”

As transportation manager for Gap Inc., Joel oversees transportation procurement, operations and strategy development. Building on his 17 years of experience, he hopes to broaden his skills, grow his career and evolve his retail supply chain expertise in progressive leadership roles at Gap Inc. so he can have greater decision-making influence. He believes a Dream BIG scholarship from the NRF Foundation and University of Phoenix can help him get there.

“Obtaining a business degree from University of Phoenix will provide me the opportunity to strengthen my self-development and achieve my goal to give back to those who have helped me in my career, and in my community.”

Drawing on inspiration from his twin brother — a recent college graduate — as well as numerous mentors and leaders along the way, Joel looks forward to continuing to build teams, negotiate supplier contracts, develop new solutions and be involved in various community action events.  “Obtaining a business degree from University of Phoenix will provide me the opportunity to strengthen my self-development and achieve my goal to give back to those who have helped me in my career, and in my community.”
