Finding a fulfilling career in her happy place

Upon completing her first year of college, Amie Lane wanted to “mix things up a bit” in her life. After a few stints waiting tables and managing small restaurants, she was ready for new challenges. As she considered her career options, she filled out an application at The Container Store near campus. “It had always been my happy place, a place to unwind and meet a friendly face.”

Amie soon discovered that she enjoyed working at The Container Store even more than shopping there. After three and a half years as a part-time employee, she was promoted to sales trainer and began traveling across the country to help prepare employees to open new stores. Along the way, she also discovered that she had a true knack for coaching and implementing new training styles.

“To grow into a leadership position in any company, a foundational understanding of business is key.”

However, a conversation with her training manager really drove Amie to focus on her future. When asked what her career goals were, Amie gave her standard answer: She loved every aspect of the business and was open to anything that provided new challenges. Unimpressed, her training manager challenged her to identify a more specific goal. Amie realized, “If I don’t have a concrete goal, I’ll never get the opportunity.” After careful consideration, Amie decided that she wanted to become a writer for the company’s training department. A year later, that is exactly what she is doing.

With her Dream BIG scholarship from the NRF Foundation and University of Phoenix, Amie plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business and focus her studies on business management and entrepreneurship. By expanding her knowledge about the anatomy of business and best practices for sustainable growth, Amie plans to apply what she learns to her growth as a leader with The Container Store. “To grow into a leadership position in any company, a foundational understanding of business is key.”
