Rebecca Fox

Rebecca Fox, store manager at Dollar General, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business from University of Phoenix.

Guided by her grandfather’s compassion and work ethic

“You only get out of life what you put into it.” Those words guided Rebecca Fox’s grandfather as he served as the primary caregiver for her and her family. A World War II veteran who worked two jobs to make ends meet, he was a man of strong personal convictions and a tireless work ethic.

“He taught me the importance of balancing work, providing for your family and giving back to your community,” Rebecca says. “He has inspired me to be the person that I am, and his tireless efforts caring for his family and community were an inspiration for many.”

Following in her grandfather’s footsteps, Rebecca served in the United States Army herself, and after her enlistment she sought out a company that valued work, family and community just as he did. She found one in Dollar General, where she currently serves as manager of the company’s Loveland, Ohio, store.

In just two years with the retailer, Rebecca has not just managed all day-to-day operations of the store and supervised a team of employees; she's also coordinating community fundraising efforts, working with peer groups to develop store operations procedures and participating in the Dollar General Ideas program to improve corporate processes.

Rebecca’s enthusiasm for her company is matched by her desire to advance her education and career. She plans to use her Dream BIG scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business at University of Phoenix. In conjunction with her current training in Dollar General’s District Manager Development Program, the degree will help fast-track Rebecca’s career goals within the organization and equip her to face bigger challenges. And just as her grandfather did, Rebecca hopes to “lead by example” and become a compassionate mentor to her employees, a trusted resource to her colleagues and a source of inspiration to her entire family.

The National Retail Federation collaborates with University of Phoenix to offer the Dream BIG Scholarship to people who work in retail.
