Damion Butler, assistant store manager at Microsoft Stores, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business from University of Phoenix.

A love for people, pixels and unpredictability

Damion Butler loves people. And pixels. His love for computers, combined with his passion for retail, makes his job as Assistant Store Manager at Microsoft Stores nothing short of a dream job. “I feel privileged to work for a company committed to service, world-class products and the community,” says Damion.

For more than 23 years, Damion has worked in retail. No matter the job, no matter the store, the story is always the same: Damion worked his way to the top thanks to hard work, dedication and a passion for the business and customers he served. Eventually, Damion wants to take his career to the next level and become a store manager. With a bachelor’s degree in business, thanks to a Dream BIG scholarship from University of Phoenix and the NRF Foundation, he believes he can do just that.

For some, the unpredictability of retail can be intimidating. Damion is not one of those people. He thrives on the fast-paced environment, unpredictable events, chance meetings and new challenges, and his days are filled with opportunities he never expected. “I love being able to take a potentially negative situation and turn it into a one-of-a-kind experience,” he explains. “I find that I can make an impact every day in retail.”

But making an impact goes beyond the bricks-and-mortar for Damion. Raised by a mom who selflessly did everything in her power — including working three jobs – to provide for her three children, he has taken her example and applied it to his own life. He also credits the people who helped him and his family along the way. Whether it was rides home from Boy Scouts or baseball practice, Damion acknowledges all the friends and family in his life who played a part in making him who he is today. “I will pay it forward,” he says.

The National Retail Federation collaborates with University of Phoenix to offer the Dream BIG Scholarship to people who work in retail. This year, 20 recipients received full-tuition scholarships to help them pursue their big dreams. Meet the Class of 2014 and learn more about the Dream BIG Scholarship.
