Bryan Winter, operational sales at The Container Store, is pursuing an MBA from University of Phoenix.

Putting retail in a new perspective

Bryan Winter views retail a little different than most. Working in sales at The Container Store, he doesn’t see shelves, products or customers. He dreams bigger — believing that retail can make a much larger, more meaningful impact in the world around us. “I want the world to see that a career in retail can provide so many opportunities to be active in community outreach, to foster relationships with people of many different backgrounds and to provide support, as you would in a big family,” explains Bryan.

I want others to experience the same delight and happiness that happens when your dreams finally become a reality.

It’s his passion for helping others that drives Bryan forward. He attributes this quality, as well as his tenacity, work ethic and determination, to his mom. “These are all things that you can only learn from someone who is a true inspiration,” he said. “She is the leader I want to be.”

Now, with the help of an MBA, thanks to a Dream BIG scholarship from University of Phoenix and the NRF Foundation, Bryan can take the next step in his retail journey. In high school, he began working at The Container Store and for the next seven years, he focused on working his way up through the organization and helping others along the way.

His passion for The Container Store is strong — so strong, in fact, that while in college, he flew to California one weekend every month so he could keep his position in the store and keep on learning.

Bryan admits that he loves his job and he loves helping people. He believes furthering his education will help him successfully blend his passion, education and experience in an effort to become the leader he knows he can be — while always helping others. “I want others to experience the same delight and happiness that happens when your dreams finally become a reality.”

The National Retail Federation collaborates with University of Phoenix to offer the Dream BIG Scholarship to people who work in retail. This year, 20 recipients received full-tuition scholarships to help them pursue their big dreams. Meet the Class of 2014 and learn more about the Dream BIG Scholarship.
