Angelo Chavez, district loss prevention manager/ORC manager at Albertsons, is pursuing an MBA from University of Phoenix.

A man who knows something about career mobility

To say that Angelo Chavez wears multiple hats on a daily basis is an understatement. As the District Loss Prevention Manager and the Organized Retail Crime Manager for Albertsons, Angelo oversees Loss Prevention in 17 stores, two distribution centers and three closed locations. He also has jurisdiction over organized retail crime investigations in 180 stores throughout California. On a daily basis, he handles everything from customer complaints and check fraud investigations to food safety audits and internal interviews regarding policy violations. But he dreams of doing even more.

Earning an MBA, thanks to a Dream BIG scholarship from University of Phoenix and the NRF Foundation, will help him make those dreams a reality. “A master’s degree will add credibility and life experience to my background, and show leadership within my organization and beyond that I have the drive, desire, commitment and dedication to establish significant goals and achieve results,” says Angelo.

I hope to one day earn my master’s degree so that I can dedicate it to my mother and make her proud.

There’s no denying that Angelo loves retail. Working hourly and salaried positions across 248 locations in two states should be enough proof. But it’s more than the people and the products that gets Angelo excited to work within the retail industry. “Many people see retail as nothing more than selling apples and oranges,” he explains. “They don’t get the privilege of knowing the infinite number of people and pieces which must function in cohesion behind the scenes, to get those apples and oranges to the shelves.” It’s this ability to multitask under pressure, as well as his willingness to constantly learn and face any challenge presented to him, that makes Angelo an inspiration to those who work with him.

But it’s someone beyond the shelves who has influenced Angelo most — his mom. As a single mother, she raised Angelo and his two sisters while always working to instill a sense of dedication and family in her three children. Beyond management, Angelo hopes to achieve one additional dream. “I hope to one day earn my master’s degree so that I can dedicate it to my mother and make her proud.”
