Christine Liberto

Christine Liberto, pharmacist at Walmart, is pursuing an MBA from University of Phoenix.

The innovative retail pharmacist

When you talk to Christine Liberto, it’s clear that education is at the forefront of her mind. Whether she’s volunteering to tutor pharmacy technicians, discussing her dream of offering self-management diabetes education to customers, or chatting about plans for her Dream BIG scholarship, education is a driving motivator for Christine, who has been a pharmacist at Walmart since she graduated from college.

Christine dove head first into retail at the age of 16 when she became a pharmacy technician at Walgreens. Pharmacy retail is a lot more than just filling prescriptions, Christine says, and she takes care to really focus on the human interactions that are part of her work. Whether she’s explaining a long list of medications to a customer recently released from hospital or helping out a mom with a sick kid, Christine strives to bring empathy and understanding to her role.

On the business side, Walmart has offered Christine the chance to learn about the inner workings of a retail business, including teamwork, decision-making, problem solving and multitasking. Christine also credits her retail experiences with teaching her how to be flexible and adapt quickly to different situations.

Someday, Christine dreams of combining her drive to help customers and pharmacy know-how with those essential business skills to create a new kind of pharmacy. “Providing exceptional patient care drives me to be motivated every single day,” says Christine. She hopes to open a pharmacy to offer individualized patient care, including a diabetes care and management program that would help teach customers how to manage their disease.

Christine is excited to continue her education as a Dream BIG scholarship recipient, courtesy of the University of Phoenix and the NRF Foundation.  According to Christine, an MBA with a concentration in project management will help her further develop the skills needed to run her own retail business one day.
