For consumers who want to eat fresh, nutritious foods without visiting the farmers’ market, a mid-sized supermarket selling colorful local produce and freshly made prepared foods could be a dream come true.

Scheduled to open this spring in Sacramento, Calif., Market 5-ONE-5’s name demonstrates its focus: Organic, Nutrition, Education. The numeral five refers to the five senses and “the five essential nutrients that we need to be healthy: carbs, protein, vitamins, minerals and water,” says General Manager Levi Wingo.

Owner Michael Teel is also CEO of Sacramento-based Raley’s supermarket chain, though Market 5-ONE-5 is not affiliated with Raley’s. The store will carry 7,000 to 11,000 products, compared with 40,000-plus at a typical grocery store.

Produce will be in the center of the 11,000-square-foot store; other departments include prepared foods, liquor, full-service meat, dairy and a health and wellness section. There will be about 60 parking spaces, plus 70 indoor and outdoor seats.

Based on the belief that customers want to know where their food comes from and want to connect with their local stores, experts on staff include a trained chef, nutritionist, sommelier, barista and butchers.

“Education is a differentiator for us,” Wingo says.
