Summary Points:

  • Retail stores and food service and drinking places employ a higher percentage of women, just over 50 percent, compared to the manufacturing sector, where less that one-third of the workforce are women.

  • More than one-third (40.4 percent) of all women working in retailing (broadly defined) work at food service and drinking places, where 52.4 percent of the retail workforce is female.
