Washington, October 13, 2011 – The National Retail Federation today commended NRF Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French for being named a top association lobbyist by the venerable Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill. French, who previously worked on Capitol Hill and for other trade associations, joined NRF as chief lobbyist in February 2011.
“David is truly deserving of this recognition, having shown tremendous leadership on behalf of the retail sector and the business communities,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “The Hill’s recognition is testament to David’s leadership as an effective educator, advocate, coalition-builder and communicator.”
In naming French a top association lobbyist, The Hill wrote, “French, a former legislative assistant to then-Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), is pushing for a closer look at the Internet sales tax as brick-and-mortar retailers try to level the playing field with their online competitors.”
French, who oversees a dozen government affairs and public policy experts at NRF, was instrumental to the retail community’s efforts to defeat Senator Tester’s (D-MT) bill to delay swipe fee reform. He is also a key architect of NRF’s Jobs, Innovation and Consumer Value Agenda, announced in September 2011, which is a multi-year advocacy effort to promote the retail industry’s priorities, including corporate tax reform, visa reform and sales tax fairness.
As the world’s largest retail trade association and the voice of retail worldwide, NRF’s global membership includes retailers of all sizes, formats and channels of distribution as well as chain restaurants and industry partners from the United States and more than 45 countries abroad. In the United States, NRF represents an industry that includes more than 3.6 million establishments and which directly and indirectly accounts for 42 million jobs – one in four U.S. jobs. The total U.S. GDP impact of retail is $2.5 trillion annually, and retail is a daily barometer of the health of the nation’s economy. www.nrf.com.
