NRF Updates Active Shooter Guidelines for Retailers in Response to New Federal Training
Washington, March 31, 2011 - Working to provide its members and the industry with the most up to date information about emergency response protocols, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NRF has updated its active shooter emergency response guidelines, which were originally created in 2008.
NRF’s updates coincide with the release of DHS’ latest online training program, which provide retailers and other private sector employees specific guidelines and protocols on how to respond to an active shooter incident.
"The threat of real-life crisis situations doesn't stop short of retail stores or malls and retailers must remain aware of potential dangers" said Joe LaRocca, Senior Asset Protection Advisor, NRF. "It's imperative for retailers to educate their employees with the latest updates on emergency situations, which include in-store shootings. By working closely with law enforcement, retailers are able to provide potentially life-saving information for their most valuable assets - their employees and their customers."
The guide serves to educate companies about active shooters, which have become a serious threat in recent years. Basic guidelines for how to analyze the situation and react accordingly are outlined in a way that serves all types of retailers regardless of size. NRF encourages retailers to use the guidelines as a part of their larger emergency management plan to protect employees and customers.
As the world's largest retail trade association and the voice of retail worldwide, the National Retail Federation's global membership includes retailers of all sizes, formats and channels of distribution as well as chain restaurants and industry partners from the U.S. and more than 45 countries abroad. In the U.S., NRF represents the breadth and diversity of an industry with more than 1.6 million American companies that employ nearly 25 million workers and generated 2010 sales of $2.4 trillion. www.nrf.com
