The National Retail Federation today welcomed the introduction of legislation that would establish a new unit at the Department of Justice focused on investigating and prosecuting organized retail crime.

The National Retail Federation announced the recipients of the distinguished Loss Prevention Retail Partnership Award, Ring of Excellence Award, Volunteers in Action and the 2010 Loss Prevention Case of the Year at its annual Loss Prevention Conference and EXPO at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Preliminary results of the latest National Retail Security Survey, released today at the National Retail Federation’s Loss Prevention Conference and EXPO, show that retail shrinkage decreased to 1.44 percent of retail sales in 2009, down from 1.51 percent in 2008. The survey is a collaborative effort between NRF and the University of Florida.

As the topic of retail loss prevention continues to gain traction among law enforcement and legislatures, retailers will gather under one roof to learn ways to stop the multi-billion dollar problem of retail theft and fraud. NRF’s Loss Prevention Conference, June 14-16 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, is the premier event for senior retail loss prevention executives and their business partners. The EXPO hall, featuring 200 exhibiting companies, will be open June 14-15.

As recognition for their work in fighting organized retail crime, two National Retail Federation employees were recently awarded certificates from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The world’s largest online marketplace is partnering with the world’s largest retail trade association to tackle organized retail crime. This unique partnership between eBay and the National Retail Federation will receive tie in support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, retailer participation and new technology to identify and attack organized retail crime.
