The National Council of Chain Restaurants applauded Saturday’s veto of California Senate Bill 120 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bill would have forced chain restaurants with at least fourteen locations to post calories beside each regular food item on their menu boards. It also would have required those restaurants to provide information about calories, saturated fat and trans fat, carbohydrates and levels of sodium on hand-out menus.

The National Council of Chain Restaurants (NCCR) announced that two restaurant industry veterans have been elected to serve as co-chairs for NCCR’s Food Safety Task Force. Larry Scaglione, Senior Director, Vendor Quality Assurance, Denny's, and Keith Brazeau, Vice President of Quality Control, In-N-Out Burger, were elected at NCCR’s October Food Safety Task Force meeting. As co-chairs, Brazeau and Scaglione will develop programming for the Task Force’s 2007 meetings. Both will serve one-year terms.

The National Council of Chain Restaurants filed two sets of comments today with the New York Board of Health about its proposals to amend the New York City Health Code to ban trans fat in restaurants and require caloric statements be provided on restaurant menus. The comments, sent to Rena Bryant, Secretary to the Board of Health, were submitted as the Board held a hearing about the proposal.

Today’s Senate passage of S. 2611, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006, is a step in the right direction, according to the National Council of Chain Restaurants, a division of the National Retail Federation. In addition to enhancing border security, the proposal would establish a new temporary worker program and provides undocumented immigrants with a process to earn legal residence here.
