On February 23, 2012, NRF hosted Choice and Competition Coalition partners for a roundtable discussion on the looming deadlines and massive requirements of the health care reform law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The roundtable featured experts from NRF, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and American Osteopathic Association, and focused on the urgent need for timely, simple and complete rules on the establishment of health insurance exchanges. IOM’s recommendations – a step away from affordability?

Our Stance on Health Care Reform

Representing the retail industry—which directly and indirectly employs one in four Americans— the National Retail Federation has long been committed to helping find a solution to the high cost of health care and coverage.  NRF proposed a comprehensive plan in 2008 – the NRF Vision for Health Care Reform – to cover all Americans with higher quality and more affordable health coverage. Although elements of the NRF Vision can be seen in the new health care law, NRF opposed its enactment because of the law’s failure to adequately address health care costs and the law’s job-killing employer mandate.

NRF is working today to repeal the most onerous provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) – such as the employer mandate – as well as to smooth implementation of PPACA – e.g. to manage workforce needs for full, part-time, temporary and seasonal workers whose hours can vary week-by-week.

The National Retail Federation continues to lead the broad retail community’s response to the new health care reform law. We are also helping to lead the greater business community in allied effort.
