Joint Letter from Stephen I. Sadove and Matthew R. Shay

In 2013, we made great progress in pursuing our strategic priorities, advancing the interests of the retail industry and delivering value to our members. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, while we have accomplished a great deal, we remain inspired to pursue the opportunities that lie ahead.

NRF has spent much of the past year telling lawmakers, the public, and the media about the importance of retail. We have worked tirelessly to show the depth and breadth of our industry, which goes far beyond associates at cash registers or products on shelves. When people see the careers offered by retail, the integral role retailers play in the communities they serve, and the constant innovations that keep retailers a step ahead of their customers’ expectations, they realize how much retail contributes not just to the economy but to society as a whole.

Having policymakers understand and appreciate retail is essential to influencing the policy decisions that affect retailers’ bottom lines. That’s why NRF has launched programs like “This is Retail,” which highlights the role that our industry plays in communities – as well as congressional districts – in creating jobs, launching careers, and driving innovation. From Capitol Hill to Wall Street, our members continue to serve as our best communicators, making it abundantly clear that This Is Retail.

Through all of this, we have emphasized that retail is a barometer of our nation’s economy – and that the best and fastest way to a better economy is to help build, sustain and support a strong retail industry. A robust, expanding retail industry benefits the millions of customers our members serve every minute of every day in communities across America.

While we look at the work of 2013, we also look ahead at challenges and opportunities to come. There are great things “in store” for retail, and we’re proud to be part of the greatest industry in world.
